Live planes and ships, and a warning when one is heading somewhere it should not be

Every aircraft and vessel on this map is real and moving. Project Flys Down projects each one forward along its current track and tells you if it is about to enter restricted airspace, or if two ships are about to pass too close.

1. Pick a place from the Where menu. Washington has the FAA's prohibited areas; the Gulf of Finland has ships.
2. Click anything to see where it came from, where it is going and how old the report is.
3. Watch the Alerts panel. Red means inside a zone or about to be.

Positions are live and measured. Routes are not: ADS-B does not broadcast a destination, so the origin and destination come from a volunteer database keyed on the callsign, and airlines fly one number over several legs a day. Measured at Washington National, seven arriving flights in ten were reported on a different leg. Every route here is checked against the aircraft's own position, altitude and track, and one that does not survive is labeled unverified with no arrival estimate. Each flight also links out to FlightAware, which holds the day's schedule.
